The Top Ten Reasons to NOT Defund Planned Parenthood

Retiring Senator Jon Kyl stated that “90% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion.” Kyl then retracted his statement, claiming that his words were “not intended to be a factual statement.”

This is a rough breakdown of how Planned Parenthood actually spends its $330 million (about one dollar per citizen) of federal funding each year.

Testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases: 35 percent. Contraception: 35 percent. Cancer screening and prevention: 16 percent. Other women’s health services: 10 percent. Abortion: 3 percent.

Furthermore, in accordance with federal law, not one dollar of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding directly pays for abortion procedures. The only thing Planned Parenthood does with your tax dollars in relation to abortion is to help women make informed decisions regarding their choices.

Here are ten very good reasons not to “defund” Planned Parenthood:

1. Planned Parenthood educates women in matters of birth control, which reduces the need for abortion.

2. Planned Parenthood educates women in matters of body image, raising their self-esteem. This in turn leads to less single mothers because they choose better men.

3. Planned Parenthood provides screening for anemia, cholesterol, diabetes and thyroid issues.

4. Planned Parenthood tests men for colon cancer, erectile dysfunction, jock itch, infertility, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and offers vasectomies.

5. Planned Parenthood informs women about pregnancy prevention, prenatal care, pregnancy testing and stages of pregnancy.

6. Planned Parenthood offers information to help women determine if they are in a safe and healthy relationship with their significant other.

7. Planned Parenthood offers women a variety of services related to preventing sexually transmitted diseases, including the use of contraceptives and how to get tested.

8. Planned Parenthood offers pap smears, mammograms, help with menstruation and menopause.

9. Planned Parenthood helps women get treated for yeast infections and urinary tract infections.

10. Senator Jon Kyl lied about what Planned Parenthood does and $330 million dollars is a drop in the bucket in regards to our federal budget.

  1. let’s attack planned parenthood and blame all the economical problems US has, on it. it’s easier that to ask the pentagon to give account on how they spend the tax payers money.

  2. OK, you are completely wrong about Planned Parenthood. They encourage abortion, even when you don’t need one. The education a woman gets is how easy it is and what a great choice to choose abortion. This is the primary message people get with Planned Parenthood, the image they have and their direction. But even though abortion is a barbaric and unnecessary practice, the point is not the Pentagon or what George Bush did or how cool to have a party like it’s 1984 President Obama (on the backs of the poor), the point is about funding. I will ask you: Why should I be forced to fund something that is not just against my religion, is an agenda and philosophy I do not condone and fight against, but it is something that can be funded in other ways? Finally, how do I know about Planned Parenthood and abortion? What makes me the expert? I am one of their victims.

    1. I’ve used planned parenthood for about 4 years. they are a great organization because they gave me birth-control pills, pap exams at very low costs. they never mentioned abortion to me. i don’t know where you get this kind of ideas. probably cause u are a republican (FYI i’m not a rep or democrat). do research and see how the government is spending tax payers money. so it’s ok for the government to waste money on Libya? Planned Parenthood does not use the tax payers money for abortions. get your facts straight!!!

        1. IF YOU GO TO GET AN ABORTION THERE YOU PAY FOR IT YOURSELF! ABORTIONS ARE NOT FREE AT PLANNED PARENTHOOD! YOUR IGNORANCE IS STOMACH TURNING!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. I have my facts straight and I did not try to personally insult you to make my point. It is against my religion to support a group that has anything at all with abortion. This is not about Republicans. And there are other places women can get better treatment, including mammograms (which Planned Parenthood does not provide. I hate it when other people try to tell me what I experienced. I went to Planned Parenthood and I know what happened. I will never, ever forget it. BTW, I also know how the government is spending money. The CBO, even said the spending has to stop–or nobody will have money for any kind of programs. What don’t you get about that. There is no grove of money trees somewhere that the mean Republicans are hiding from you. Do a web search about the CBO and see the massive spending.

And what does this have to do with Libya? LOL.

        1. I did not intend to personally insult you. That being said, I can understand your religious concerns. But we do have separation of church and state, and abortion is presently a legally sanctioned medical procedure in this country. I wish there was a way that your beliefs could be respected, while still providing much needed assistance to impoverished families. And we are spending far too much. I just think there are other things we can cut that are far more wasteful.

    2. Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, Public Radio and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in TARP money, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes? Yeah, me neither.

    3. Well, hundreds of thousands of other women they have helped disagree with your assessment. Maybe you just got a bad employee. Or did you visit every office they operate and talk with each employee to see if they all suggest abortion as the only option?

    4. The fact that the government says we need to make sacrifices, and also decides to cut the funding for a lot of programs that are designed to help those in need, but at the same time goes and dumps bombs in Libya, I mean, WTF??? There is money for that stuff but not for schools, students, senior citizens etc? And they are trying to make Plannned Parenthood, the Unions etc as their escape goat, blaming the economical mess on them???? Are you that blind. And honestly I’m tired of hearing people using the religion card. Religion has no involvement in social policies. Don’t use religion to impose your beliefs on other people. If you don’t like Planned Parenthood, then don’t go there, is a free country. But do not use religious arguments to justify your ‘crusade’ against Planned Parenthood.

  3. I think we need to give them MORE money. Let them preform MORE abortions. It’s simple math. Many of the people going to them obviously aren’t very smart. I would imagine most are from the lower echelons of the education ladder as well. When those people have kids, the tax payers end up having to subsidize the raising of them via wic, welfare, and other social programs which cost way more than the abortions. It’s a perfect money saving move…..

  4. Ms. Linda. This is for you. http://www.cbo.gov/publication/42635

How bout taking some time to educate yourself, then get back to us. Specifically, let me know how much, in percentage terms, the 300 million spent on Planned Parenthood Clinics, and even more specifically, the 3% spent on abortion related services equals in the whole grand scheme of the complete budget picture. (hint: the number will start like this, .0000000).
While I acknowledge your religious backed disgust on the issue of abortion, we, as a society, have decided that it’s a women’s right to choose, and nothing supersedes this right, not even your belief in God, or his word, or Santa Claus for that matter.

    Respectfully, your neighbor.
