Members from Occupy Wichita were among those in attendance at today’s town hall meeting on reducing childhood poverty in Kansas. Speaker Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation was giving a presentation on why single mothers were not equipped to raise children and how they should be reliant upon a man, rather than standing on their own.
During Rector’s speech, 15 members of Occupy Wichita stood up, in solidarity with Occupy Wall St., with our backs turned to the podium. When Rector concluded his speech, we turned on the human mic and set the record straight, receiving applause from the audience at several times.
The Wichita Police Department deployed officers to disperse our group. One woman, who appears to be in her fifties, was arrested.
