Yes, Governor Sam Brownback. You do Suck.

Emma Sullivan, a Kansas high school senior, has been ordered to write Kansas Governor Sam Brownback an apology for a tweet the 18 year-old sent from her phone at a school sponsored event that Brownback spoke at.

A member of Brownback’s staff found the tweet and it was forwarded to the school, Shawnee Mission East in Prairie Village, Kansas, just outside Kansas City. The principal reprimanded Emma and expects her to write this letter, apologizing for exercising her right to free speech.

Emma has since become a media sensation, doing interviews for CNN and the likes. The tweet which Emma sent stated that she had made mean comments to Brownback in person, and that he sucked. Emma ended the tweet with the hashtag #heblowsalot.

I will now assert that Sam Brownback does in fact, suck, in accordance with the popular definition of the phrase.

Sam Brownback recently held a series of town hall meetings in which Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation (paid for with Kansas tax dollars) addressed advocates for the impoverished on solutions to “reducing childhood poverty”.

According to Rector’s speech, the number one cause of childhood poverty in Kansas, and America, is the “decline of marriage”. Rector went on and on, blaming the single mother for being “uneducated” and casting young women as being incapable of raising children without a husband.

Rector says that if these women were married, they could stay at home and raise the children because the father would make enough to support the whole family. Rector makes almost no reference to the father of the impoverished child, and not one single reference to increasing efforts to enforce child support issues.

Near the end of the speech, fifteen members of Occupy Wichita, a branch of the Occupy Wall St. movement, stood with their backs to Rector, silently awaiting the end of his sexist speech of unrealistic solutions for reducing childhood poverty.

At the end of his speech, the Occupy Wichita demonstrators (I was one of them) used the human mic to address the audience. Occupy Wichita outlined Brownback’s agenda of cutting services to the poor to line the pockets of his rich friends.

Despite applause from the audience and the fact that we were leaving anyway, Wichita Police officers stormed the room and ushered the demonstrators out, injuring and arresting a 61 year-old woman for “obstruction of justice”.

Freedom of speech is for everyone. Sam Brownback and others who oppose freedom use intimidation tactics to discourage dissent. But as we see, even a high school student can challenge these legislative bullies and win.

So yes, Sam Brownback, Emma was right. You do suck. Would you like to call my principal?

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, accused of sucking.

  1. Perhaps the tweet of “You suck” by Emma Sullivan to the Kansas State’s Governor from one of your high school students’s might be a bit offensive to some, it is not a violation of our First Amendment Rights. It is an expression of opinion, one that need not require or mandate retraction or retribution for such expression. Maybe a polite reminder of “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all” would have been more appropriate , but to ask the student to apologize in writing, supports an educational system that is unaware of what the first amendment actually gives right to. Please review this with your perplexed principal , administration and students, so as not to cultivate misunderstandings of our United States Constitution, in the future.

P.S. Given the Governor’s lack of enlightenment toward impoverished woman with children, perhaps he really isn’t tuned at all. Tell the good governor of Kansas, there is a direct link to NOT HAVING MONEY , aka, financial decline, that is the MAJOR cause of childhood poverty. Provide good jobs, and a source of revenue to people and there will be less childhood poverty regardless of a couples marital status. Perhaps The Heritage Foundation might want to take their divine self anointed blinders off, and live in the now.

Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and by many state constitutions and state and federal laws, with the exception of obscenity, defamation, incitement to riot, and fighting words,[1] as well as harassment, privileged communications, trade secrets, classified material, copyright, patents, military conduct, commercial speech such as advertising, and time, place and manner restrictions.
Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship. The term freedom of expression is sometimes used synonymously, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on libel, slander, obscenity, incitement to commit a crime, etc.

  2. I am disapointed in our government.. the girl has the right to her own opinion.. she should not be made to appologise for her own beleif ..this country is on the wrong path..blaming lack of religion..blaming single parents, taking away our rights every day. I am posting a part of a recent rant that I shared online with you.
    Rant alert!!!!

All this bull..fingers pointing every which way..blaming the lack of God in the classrooms for all the teen issues in schools, the answer is not specifically God but it is spirituality period be that god or goddess, Buddha or Allah or Christ or Thor whatever our children need to be taught values of right and wrong good and bad..when you take that away from them you damn them .. no the answer is not to cram religion down their throats..but to give them the choice to learn the same as they do sex ed classes. Have parents sign a waiver each year I allow or do not allow my student to learn about religious material..but teach about all religions not just Christianity , this country was founded on religious freedoms..not freedom from but freedom of..meaning Christianity is not the only choice.. you can be Buddhist, Christian Catholic, Jewish, wiccan, pagan , Amish, you can believe in native American gods and goddesses..there are nearly as many religious choices as their are people in the world who are you to say which one is right? Wide is the path to damnation right? So if everyone is going that way it can’t be the right path, the first so called Americans ( the pilgrims) were not Christian. They were Puritans..nothing like today’s church. Before they were here we had pagans .. So before you go all religious think just a little.. we need to focus on spirituality not religion each persons spiritual walk is personal and should not be influenced by another’s we are all unique in every way so why do we have so many cookie cutter religions?

    1. Why the rant on religion here? It has nothing to do with the topic of Emma’s unabashed tweet “Brownback sucks.” She is entitled to her opinion no matter how harshly expressed religious issues or not and falls in under protected First Amendment speech rights. The principal of a school has no business intruding on Emma’s tweet made from home after school hours or during school hours for that matter.
