City decided to hire Terri Moses as Chief long before any announcements were made

Before the City even announced who the finalists would be for Chief, I told you that they were going to choose Terri Moses. I knew this because the decision was made a long time ago.

The City did not announce the finalists for Chief until August 20, 2015.
The City did not announce the finalists for Chief until August 20, 2015.

This entire process has been a sham, and unless we show up in numbers tomorrow night, and voice our concerns, the City is going to appoint a Chief that we will have absolutely no leverage over, and she will likely be Chief for decades.

Terri Moses has spent the last three decades making powerful friends in this state, and those friends will protect her, just as former Mayor Carl Brewer protected his best friend, former Chief Norman Williams, for decades.

Because of Norman Williams’ political connections, he was able to perform at a mediocre level for 14 years, covering up rampant misconduct, promoting his own mistress, and concealing the crimes of his officers with impunity.

Do not make the same mistake with Terri Moses. Her political allies, the same people who have elevated her to the position she is in now, will thwart every attempt we make to bring transparency and accountability to this police department.

If enough opposition to Moses’ appointment is expressed in tomorrow night’s meeting, there is a chance that the City will appoint her competitor, Joel Fitzgerald, who is an outsider to this community.

If Fitzgerald fails to clean this department up, we will have a much easier time organizing effective campaigns to force him to do so. And it really is that simple. We can remain silent, and get railroaded here, or we can speak up, and perhaps move towards real change.

Attend the public meeting to question the candidates for Chief this Monday, August 31st, 6:30 pm, at Century II.
